Numbers

Tonight I went to Fleisher for a painting class, also know as therapy. The actual title of the class is "Painting Intuitively" and encourages one to paint for the experience and not necessarily the end result. For this week's class we were told to bring in piece of our art work and a picture of an artist's work that inspires us. The assignment for the night was to then take one or both of those pieces to use as a point of departure. We could use the color palette, texture or some element of the piece.
Of course I chose Jasper Johns for my inspiration piece. I can't find the particular picture online that I was using from a book but I found the brighter color version.... I'll try to replace it with the muted color version later.

Anyway, this is what I came up with.

I started with just trying to copy the color palette with grayish blues and greens and hints of yellow and brown. But then I wanted to make the texture more interesting so I used the dot screen stencil I had. Then I tried playing with the number stencils. I chose to make them sporadic as opposed to in rows so that it didn't become too literal of an interpretation of Johns. I haven't decided yet if this is done or if I want to go back with more layers.
